Three oral statements were delivered in plenary sessions, addressing critical dimensions of the right to development in today\u2019s world, co-sponsored by New Humanity, APG23 (Associazione Comunit\u00e0 Papa Giovanni XXIII), and other Catholic-inspired organizations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"206\" data-end=\"961\">In line with the United Nations\u2019 recognition of <strong data-start=\"999\" data-end=\"1057\">the right to development as an inalienable human right<\/strong>, New Humanity\u2019s participation reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to promoting <strong data-start=\"1141\" data-end=\"1171\">integral human development<\/strong>\u2014a vision that places the human person at the center of every effort for justice, peace, and sustainability.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1. Challenging coercive measures that undermine human dignity<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.new-humanity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/N.H.-co-sponsorship-on-Coercitive-Mesures-W.G.-on-RtD.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#x27a1;&#xfe0f;&#x1f4c4; Read the full statement<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1011\" data-end=\"1362\">The first statement focused on the <strong data-start=\"1046\" data-end=\"1104\">negative impact of unilateral coercive measures (UCMs)<\/strong>\u2014sanctions that often disproportionately harm civilian populations in affected countries. The NGOs expressed concern about how UCMs impede access to health care, education, water, and essential services, particularly harming the most vulnerable communities. <em>\u201cUCMs must be assessed from an ethical and moral perspective, they deprive people of fundamental human rights and dignity. This is unacceptable.\u201d<\/em> The statement echoed the call of UN experts for countries and institutions to withdraw or minimize such measures and to prioritize cooperation, peace, and integral development.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"1875\" data-end=\"1943\"><strong>2. Recognizing the collective dimension of the right to development<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1875\" data-end=\"1943\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.new-humanity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/N.H.-Co-sponsorship-Collective-dimension-WG-on-RtD.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#x27a1;&#xfe0f;&#x1f4c4; Read the full statement<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1945\" data-end=\"2269\">The second intervention brought attention to the <strong data-start=\"1994\" data-end=\"2018\">collective dimension<\/strong> of the right to development\u2014a topic that remains debated within international law. The statement stressed that collective rights do exist, and the recognition of peoples\u2019 rights has long been a cornerstone of the international human rights framework. Referencing international covenants and case law from the African Commission on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights, the NGOs advocated for a more dynamic and inclusive understanding of \u201cpeoples,\u201d reflecting the realities of globalization, migration, and identity. <em>\u201cThere can be no one-size-fits-all definition of peoples, we support a case-by-case approach as recommended by the Expert Mechanism.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"2681\" data-end=\"2741\"><strong>3. A call for international solidarity and legal commitment<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2681\" data-end=\"2741\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.new-humanity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/N.H-co-sponshorship-WG-on-RtD-General-Statement.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#x27a1;&#xfe0f;&#x1f4c4; Read the full statement<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2743\" data-end=\"2961\">In a general statement, the NGOs reaffirmed their belief that <strong data-start=\"2805\" data-end=\"2876\">international solidarity and multilateral cooperation are essential<\/strong> to addressing today\u2019s global challenges\u2014from debt crises to inequality and conflict. They called for the <strong data-start=\"2983\" data-end=\"3067\">adoption of a legally binding international covenant on the right to development<\/strong>, which would ensure that countries are accountable for creating enabling environments for development at national and global levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3202\" data-end=\"3342\">Quoting the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Volker T\u00fcrk, the NGOs highlighted the indivisibility of development and human rights: \u201cThe old dichotomy that holds development as somehow separate from human rights is entirely false.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3692\" data-end=\"3715\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3695\" data-end=\"3974\">The consistent engagement of Catholic-inspired organizations at the United Nations underscores their commitment to <strong data-start=\"3810\" data-end=\"3840\">integral human development<\/strong>, rooted in human dignity, solidarity among peoples, and the full realization of the <strong data-start=\"3925\" data-end=\"3973\">right to development as recognized by the UN<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During the 26th Session of the United Nations Open-Ended Intergovernmental Working Group on the Right to Development, held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, the Geneva Office of New Humanity joined the Working Group of Catholic-Inspired NGOs (CINGO) in advocating for stronger global action to uphold this fundamental human right.
