Dr. Jorge M. Dias Ferreira, New Humanity’s Main representative in Geneva,\u00a0 chaired the side event to the\u00a0 24th regular session of the UN Human Rights Council\u00a0 entitled: “Right to Development and the Post-2015 Agenda”<\/strong>.
The event<\/strong> took place on 13th\u00a0 September in\u00a0 conference room XXVII of the Palais des Nations and was organized\u00a0 jointly by New Humanity and Associazione Comunit\u00e0 Papa Giovanni XXIII (APG23), Caritas Internationalis <\/strong>and Dominicans for Justice and Peace<\/strong> (Order of preachers).<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The co-organizers also included the Permanent Mission of Italy to the UN in Geneva<\/strong>, the Geneva Forum of Catholic-inspired NGOs, the working group of Catholic-inspired NGOs for the Right to Development, IIMA, OIDEL, VIDES International, Association Points-coeur and Francisans International.<\/p>\n

The participants numbered roughly fifty<\/strong> and included representatives of various international NGOs and National Delegations as well as the Head of the Section for\u00a0 the Right to Development of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
Also present were the participants of the Henry Durant University College Summer Course in Human Rights,\u00a0 amongst whom two members of New Humanity (See the related article<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\"Ginevra-\u201cAs regards\u00a0 the right to development \u2013\u00a0 mentioned Dr. Ferreira<\/strong> in his\u00a0 introduction – we have marvellous documents. Unfortunately<\/strong>, however, the principles expressed in these documents have not always been put into practice<\/strong>.
We NGOs exist, then, for this very end: to make sure that all the principles which\u00a0 the international community has produced over the years, are developed and put into practice. Let’s see to it that these are not mere words, but deeds born of the commitment of all of us!\u201d<\/p>\n

Echoing Dr. Ferreira’s words, was the presentation \u201cCurrent situation and\u00a0 future prospects for working groups on the\u00a0 Right to Development\u201d, made by Her Excellency Ms. Tamara Kananayakam, <\/strong>Head of the\u00a0 Intergovernmental Group for the\u00a0 Right to Development.
\u201cThe millennium goals were framed against a backdrop of inequality\u00a0 \u2013 stated\u00a0 Ms. Kananayakam- which has made inevitable a long series of malfunctions. This is a structural problem which therefore requires a radical change of approach which will have to be in place for the post-2015 Development Goals. In particular, instead of an approach designed to redistribute resources, we will have to focus on the affirmation of the rights laid out in the principal international conventions.\u201c<\/p>\n

\"Ginevra-\u201cCreating a transformational vision of the Declaration of the Right to Development\u201d was, in turn, the central issue of the contribution from Dr.\u00a0 Shiami Puvimanasinghe<\/strong>, member of the Section for the Right to Development\u00a0 of the OHCHR. The key moment in his speech was his appeal that \u201cthe concept of development find a favourable environment\u00a0 for\u00a0 human rights at every level, making\u00a0 thus possible\u00a0 the realization of the entire potential of the\u00a0 human being (physically, psychologically, emotionally\u00a0 and spiritually). In this way, the right to development enters structurally\u00a0 into the sphere of human development.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mrs Maria Merceds Rossi, chief representative of APG23 in Geneva, then offered\u00a0 the perspective of the Catholic-inspired NGOs with regards to the Post-2015 Agenda<\/strong>: \u201cThe first objective must be to eradicate\u00a0 poverty \u2013 she began \u2013 but it is then necessary to focus on a concept of development centred\u00a0 on the all-round development of the individual. Our commitment is, therefore,\u00a0 to work towards making\u00a0 the Post-2015 Agenda\u00a0\u00a0 much more detailed and\u00a0 towards a proposal for an inclusive globalization which takes account of\u00a0 cultural diversity, an economy of solidarity and cooperation and, also, the concept of subsidiarity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lastly, Ms. Arafa Cherif, member of Caritas Geneva, examined the Right to Development as seen from the perspective of migrants<\/strong>. Through the experience of a Chadian female migrant, brutally mutilated for having refused a forced marriage, she reminded all present that while many countries\u00a0 have ratified\u00a0 numerous conventions on the Right to Development, the problem of their implementation\u00a0 and of the\u00a0 violence\u00a0 of which the victims are always, above all,\u00a0 women and children is still unresolved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
