New Humanity and partners urge international action in Syria

5.05.2025

The humanitarian crisis in Syria continues to devastate millions, leaving entire generations marred by conflict, displacement, and loss. In response to the recent escalation of violence in Syria’s coastal region, New Humanity joined Caritas Internationalis, OIEC, VIVAT International, and other Catholic-inspired NGOs in signing a joint appeal claiming for urgent and sustained international efforts to address the country’s pressing needs.

The appeal highlights several critical concerns:

  • Protection of minority rights: The signatories call on Syria’s transitional government to guarantee the protection of human rights for all minorities. They stress that promoting unity, inclusivity, and respect for religious freedom is essential to social cohesion, preventing sectarian division, and achieving lasting peace in Syria and the wider region.

  • Support for displaced populations: The document urges the international community to ensure the safe, sustainable, voluntary, and dignified return of displaced persons. It emphasizes that comprehensive reconstruction efforts must accompany returns to restore vital infrastructure and enable affected communities to rebuild their lives.

  • Renewed international commitment: Amid reduced global aid, the appeal welcomes recent donor conferences and calls for renewed, long-term financial support to meet Syria’s ongoing humanitarian and recovery needs.

  • Lifting of sanctions: The joint appeal advocates for the immediate lifting of sanctions that hinder reconstruction and recovery efforts, highlighting how these measures exacerbate suffering among the population.

New Humanity’s involvement in this joint appeal reflects its commitment to integral human development, human dignity, and solidarity with vulnerable communities.
